Department of Medieval Studies
The Department of Medieval Studies at the Central European University is an interdisciplinary center of postgraduate education and research located in Vienna. It gathers students from all over the world who are interested in studying the medieval past.

Baukje van den Berg 
is an expert in Byzantine studies. Her research concentrates on Byzantine education and literary thought, with a particular focus on the role of ancient literature in Byzantine culture. She teaches the following course:

Her research focuses on state-building and nation, political thought and discourse, and the rise of "individuals" and individualism in late-medieval Brabant and Bohemia. An important part of her research deals with manuscripts and the dissemination of texts and ideas.
